ets Trade Up to Draft Penn State Tackle Olu Fashanu

The New York Jets kicked off the 2024 NFL Draft by making the first trade of the night. They swapped picks with the Minnesota Vikings, moving down one spot from 10th to 11th overall.

With the 11th pick, the Jets selected Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu. The team hopes he will compete for a starting job and bolster their offensive line's depth and pass protection for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Jets Excited to Welcome Fashanu

General Manager Joe Douglas expressed the Jets' enthusiasm about drafting Fashanu. Fashanu, a four-year starter at left tackle for Penn State, impressed scouts with his performance last season, earning first-team All-American honors and Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year recognition.

Fashanu Thrilled to be a Jet

Fashanu, who grew up watching Jets players like Aaron Rodgers, expressed his excitement about joining the team. He sees the opportunity to learn from veteran tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses as invaluable.

Trade Details

In addition to moving down one spot, the Jets sent their sixth-round pick (203rd overall) to the Vikings. They received Minnesota's fourth-round pick (129th overall) and fifth-round pick (157th overall) in return.

Jets Have History Drafting Penn State Players

Fashanu becomes the 28th Nittany Lion drafted by the Jets. He joins a lineage of successful Penn State offensive players selected by the Jets, including Blair Thomas, Kyle Brady, and Kareem McKenzie.

Fashanu Continues Jets' Tradition of Drafting Tackles

The Jets have a history of drafting tackles in the first round. Fashanu is the first since Mekhi Becton from Louisville in 2020 (11th overall). The last time the Jets drafted a tackle higher than 10th overall was D'Brickashaw Ferguson from Virginia in 2006 (4th overall).
